Doris, NHS Hero - Portrait by Susan Brunskill

Doris, NHS Hero - Portrait by Susan Brunskill

It was an absolute pleasure to take part in the Portraits for NHS Heroes project, and particularly to get the opportunity to paint a portrait for a young, hardworking woman.

Doris works for the NHS as a surgical nurse at the Lister Hospital, in Chelsea. She is around the same age as my children and her words have truly touched my heart.

On a personal note, I would like to say: Doris, many thanks for all you have done, and continue to do. I very much look forward to meeting you and your undoubtedly proud mum!

The worst part about this pandemic is not having to work because I love my team and I love my job, but it’s hearing my mum’s voice every day asking when she will next see me. I miss my family more than anything in this world.

I want to say a big thank you to the NHS Heroes for your selfless acts, time spent away from loved ones and for caring for those suffering during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many thanks also go to Tom Croft, for his wonderful initiative and for pairing me with Doris. The portraits are a poignant documentation of the country’s shared experience and it was a great honour to contribute towards this.

- Susan (Susel & Co.)
